Dwarves of Abadonya

Dwarves are an ancient mountain people whose history in Abadonya is dominated by two great empires: Dragonsmane in Keynew and Frostforged Hold in Frostmarch. Dragonsmane has remained sealed since the Dwarven and Human War that followed the death of the Mad Sage, while Frostforged Hold endures as the great living dwarven power of the north.

Stone Remembers

Dwarves are among the oldest organized peoples of Abadonya. Their civilization grew around mountains, deep roads, mines, fortified halls, forges, and the belief that stone preserves both memory and obligation.

The two greatest dwarven powers became Dragonsmane and Frostforged Hold. Although they share ancestry, craft traditions, and reverence for clan, centuries of isolation and different histories have made the two empires culturally distinct.

Dwarves are found elsewhere as merchants, smiths, mercenaries, engineers, priests, explorers, and exiles, but Keynew and Frostmarch remain the two lands most closely tied to their history.

AppearanceBroad, Dense & Built for Stone

People of Mountain Blood

Dwarves are short but powerfully built, with broad shoulders, dense musculature, heavy bones, and strong hands adapted to generations of mining, climbing, forging, and underground labor.

Skin tones vary from pale stone and ruddy earth to deep brown and weathered bronze. Hair commonly appears in black, brown, red, gray, white, and iron-colored shades.

Beards are especially important among many dwarven cultures. They may be braided, ringed, clasped, or marked with family metalwork. Clothing favors durable wool, leather, heavy cloth, fitted armor, fur in Frostmarch, and finely worked metal pieces that often indicate clan, profession, oath, military rank, or personal achievement.

The Two Dwarf EmpiresDragonsmane & Frostforged Hold

Two Thrones Beneath the Mountains

For most of recorded dwarven history, two great powers have defined the destiny of their people.

Dragonsmane was the great dwarven empire of Keynew, a volcanic mountain stronghold whose halls became famous for military engineering, metalwork, deep vaults, and the stubborn independence of its rulers.

Frostforged Hold is the great dwarven empire of Frostmarch, a northern power shaped by ice, mountain warfare, harsh winters, and an unbroken tradition of fortified survival.

Among dwarves, the two holds are not viewed merely as cities. They are civilizations: repositories of ancestry, law, craft, military tradition, and the accumulated identity of entire peoples.

DragonsmaneThe Sealed Empire of Keynew

The Mountain That Closed Its Gates

Dragonsmane was once one of the greatest dwarven powers in Abadonya. Its fortifications were built into a volcanic mountain, and generations of dwarves carved halls, armories, mines, temples, roads, and defensive works into the stone.

Following the death of the Mad Sage, tensions between dwarves and humans erupted into the Dwarven and Human War. The conflict transformed relations between the two peoples and eventually ended with Dragonsmane sealing itself away from the outside world.

The gates have remained closed since that war. To outsiders, Dragonsmane became a place of rumor and unanswered questions. To dwarves, it remains an ancestral empire whose silence carries enormous historical weight.

Families descended from those who lived beyond the sealed gates may still preserve old keys, military insignia, family records, debts, inheritance claims, or stories of halls no living outsider has seen.

Frostforged HoldThe Living Empire of Frostmarch

The Northern Dwarven Power

Frostforged Hold stands in Frostmarch as the great surviving dwarven empire openly engaged with the world. Its people are shaped by brutal winters, frozen mountain roads, deep mines, hostile wilderness, and the constant need to maintain strong defenses.

Frostforged dwarves value reliability, preparation, endurance, and useful craft. A weapon, bridge, wall, tool, or promise that fails when needed is remembered far longer than something merely beautiful.

The Hold maintains soldiers, smiths, miners, engineers, caravan guards, scouts, priests, and diplomats capable of operating throughout the northern lands. Its continued survival makes it the most visible center of dwarven political power in modern Abadonya.

The Dwarven and Human WarA Wound That Never Fully Closed

War After the Mad Sage

The death of the Mad Sage was followed by a period of instability in which old alliances fractured and distrust hardened into open conflict. Among the most consequential wars of that era was the Dwarven and Human War.

The conflict permanently altered relations between Dragonsmane and the human powers of Keynew. Dwarven accounts tend to emphasize betrayal, broken agreements, territorial pressure, and the cost of trusting shorter-lived kingdoms. Human accounts often preserve very different explanations.

What remains beyond dispute is the result: Dragonsmane withdrew behind its defenses and sealed itself away. Generations later, the consequences of that decision still shape dwarven attitudes toward Keynew and the history surrounding the sealed stronghold.

Clan, Oath & CraftWhat a Dwarf Leaves Behind

Worth Measured in What Endures

Dwarven culture places enormous value on work that survives its maker. A masterwork weapon, a tunnel that remains safe for centuries, a fortress wall that holds, or an oath honored at great personal cost may become part of a family's identity.

Clan is equally important. Many dwarves introduce themselves through family, hold, profession, or oath before discussing personal accomplishments. This does not mean every dwarf accepts clan authority without question, but ancestry is rarely treated as irrelevant.

Craft is not limited to smithing. Stonecutters, brewers, engineers, jewelers, scribes, armorers, architects, miners, siegewrights, and merchants all occupy respected places in dwarven society when their work demonstrates discipline and mastery.

Faith & TraditionForge, Stone & Memory

The Sacred Work of Making

Namir holds a natural place in many dwarven traditions through the forge, fire, metalwork, and the transformation of raw material into something purposeful.

Mandella is respected by chroniclers and keepers of ancestral records, while other dwarves may follow Seraphim, Trentula, Rashtala, Marius, Rivera, Liliana, or local traditions tied to particular clans and holds.

Dwarves often treat funerary monuments, ancestral weapons, sealed tombs, clan halls, and old inscriptions with tremendous seriousness. The dead are gone, but their work and promises remain part of the living world.

Dwarf AdventurersBetween the Two Empires

What Lies Beyond the Gate

Dwarf adventurers may leave their holds in pursuit of clan obligations, lost mines, ancestral relics, military service, trade, religious duty, or unanswered questions about dwarven history.

Fighters, clerics, warpriests, paladins, rangers, barbarians, inquisitors, alchemists, cavaliers, and other martial or craft-oriented classes are common, though dwarves may pursue any class.

A Keynew dwarf may be descended from families displaced by the sealing of Dragonsmane, while a Frostmarch dwarf may serve Frostforged Hold as an emissary, soldier, engineer, or scout. Others may seek the truth of the Dwarven and Human War or wonder whether Dragonsmane's gates will ever open again.
