A Defense from an Older Age

The Old Wall runs in broken sections across the coastal approaches near Golandria. Some portions still stand several times the height of a person, while others have collapsed into long ridges of stone swallowed by grass, brush, and salt wind.

No one uses the wall as a continuous fortification today. Roads pass through old gate gaps, shepherds use fallen sections as windbreaks, and travelers sometimes camp beside surviving towers. Even in ruin, however, the wall still shapes the land around it.

Built to Endure

The surviving stonework is massive, practical, and largely undecorated. Blocks are fitted tightly, with narrow firing slits and broad wall-walks visible where upper sections remain intact.

Several old towers still rise above the surrounding fields. Their interiors are usually empty, though cracked stairs, collapsed storage rooms, and sealed lower chambers can still be found.

Portions of the foundations extend beneath modern soil, and farmers occasionally uncover buried stone while plowing fields that appear far from the visible wall.

Roads Through Old Gates

Modern traffic moves through several breaks in the Old Wall where gates once stood. Most are broad enough for wagons and caravans, and a few still retain fragments of stone arches or iron hinge mounts.

There is no toll and no permanent garrison. Patrols from Golandria occasionally inspect the road, especially after reports of bandits or suspicious activity along the coast.

Places Along the Wall

The Salt Tower: A roofless watchtower overlooking the coastal road. Salt crystals gather along its lower stones after heavy sea winds.

The Broken Gate: One of the largest surviving road gaps, framed by two partial towers and a fallen archstone.

The Long Step: A surviving section of wall-walk reachable by a cracked exterior stair. Travelers climb it for views of the road and countryside.

The Buried Course: A stretch where only the top line of foundation stones remains visible, suggesting the wall once continued much farther than it appears today.

Ruins Made Practical

Locals have adapted the wall to everyday life. Fallen stones mark property boundaries, sheltered corners are used by shepherds, and old tower bases sometimes serve as temporary storage during harvest.

Stone taken directly from standing portions is generally frowned upon. Most people consider the wall part of Keynew's shared history, even when no one agrees exactly which conflict required its construction.

Older Than Most Living Records

The precise origin of the Old Wall is debated. Some historians place its construction during a period of regional warfare, while others believe it was rebuilt multiple times over much older foundations.

What most agree on is that the wall once guarded the approaches to the Golandria region and formed part of a much larger defensive network.

Local families still tell stories of ancestors serving on its towers, though many of those stories are separated from reliable records by generations.

Whispers in the Stone

Some travelers claim voices can be heard from certain tower stairwells during strong coastal winds, sounding like guards calling to one another from positions that no longer exist.

Farmers occasionally uncover rusted weapons, broken buckles, or old coins in fields near buried wall sections.

One persistent story claims that a sealed gatehouse still exists somewhere beneath a collapsed section, untouched since the wall was abandoned.

The Open Foundation: Heavy rain exposes a stone stair descending beneath a section believed to have no interior chambers.

The Missing Patrol: A Golandrian road patrol fails to return after investigating lights near the Salt Tower.

The Fallen Arch: A collapse reveals carvings or names hidden inside stone that had been sealed for centuries.

The Night Watch: Travelers report seeing lanterns moving along the ruined wall-walk where no path remains.
