The Safest Path Through Petra
The Glass Road is not paved in the ordinary sense. Long sections of its surface have been fused into hard, smooth sheets of dark amber and smoky glass, broken at intervals by exposed stone and drifted sand. In the sun it shines from miles away, making it one of Petra's easiest landmarks to follow.
Caravans favor the road because its wells are marked, its dangerous dunes have been charted, and patrols keep many raiders and desert predators at a distance. Leaving the road may save coin, but it often costs far more in water, time, or blood.
