Undines of Abadonya

Undines are water-touched mortals whose blood carries the influence of elemental seas and living water. In Abadonya they are most strongly associated with Oriander, where warm lagoons, island rivers, reef channels, and tidal settlements have supported their communities for generations. Graceful swimmers and careful observers, they tend to see water as both homeland and inheritance.

Born Where Land Meets Water

Undine families are found across Oriander's warmer islands, especially near lagoons, river mouths, reef-protected bays, freshwater springs, and tidal villages.

Some communities trace their ancestry to old elemental encounters, while others believe generations of life beside unusually powerful waters slowly changed their bloodlines.

Most Undines are equally comfortable living among other Oriander peoples, but many prefer settlements where swimming, boating, fishing, and water travel are part of everyday life.

AppearanceThe Colors of Lakes, Rivers & Seas

Water Made Visible

Undines are humanoid in build, but their skin commonly appears in shades of turquoise, sea green, deep blue, or other colors reminiscent of clear water.

Their hair is often slightly darker than their skin and tends to be thick and straight. Many possess fin-like ears, webbed fingers, or webbed toes.

Oriander Undines usually favor practical clothing that does not hinder swimming. Light wraps, fitted garments, waterproof pouches, and simple jewelry are common, while heavy layered clothing is generally avoided.

Water CommunitiesVillages Between Shore and Current

Homes Built with the Tide

Undine communities often form near reliable water and adapt their structures to changing tides and currents. Raised homes, floating platforms, low docks, and sheltered swimming channels are common.

Children learn to swim early, and adults often navigate between nearby settlements by water rather than road.

Community decisions are usually practical and focused on access to water, fishing grounds, storm protection, freshwater supply, and safe passage between islands.

Temperament & CommunityCalm Surface, Strong Current

Emotion with Control

Undines often appear reserved around strangers but can be highly expressive among family and close friends.

They tend to value emotional self-control rather than emotional silence. Anger, affection, grief, and excitement are considered natural, but allowing those feelings to dominate every decision is viewed as poor judgment.

Loyalty to friends and family can be intense. An Undine who accepts someone into a close circle may become fiercely protective of that person.

Oriander HeritageIslands, Reefs & River Channels

A People of Warm Water

Oriander is the principal homeland of the Undines in Abadonya. Their communities are especially common where freshwater and saltwater meet, including estuaries, lagoons, and river-fed island settlements.

Some live near major trade routes and work as pilots, divers, fishers, healers, messengers, or guides. Others remain in secluded water villages hidden among reefs or mangroves.

Their swim speed and comfort in water make them particularly useful wherever ordinary travelers must cross channels, flooded ruins, submerged passages, or dangerous coastal terrain.

Faith & OutlookWater as Inheritance

The Current Continues

Undine traditions often treat water as more than a resource. Rivers, tides, rain, springs, and the sea are symbols of continuity, movement, memory, and adaptation.

In Abadonya, Rivera is the most natural divine patron for many Undines, especially those whose communities depend on tides, storms, rivers, and sea travel.

Others follow Trentula through reverence for aquatic ecosystems or Rashtala through study of elemental magic.

Undines may follow any alignment or deity. Their elemental heritage shapes ability and culture, not morality.

AdventurersFollowing the Current

Those Who Move Beyond Home Waters

Undine adventurers often leave home because of curiosity, exile, trade, elemental calling, or the simple desire to see where distant rivers and seas lead.

Druids and sorcerers are especially common because of the race's natural connection to water and elemental magic, while rangers, bards, clerics, rogues, and other mobile or socially adept classes are also frequent.

An Oriander Undine adventurer might investigate a poisoned lagoon, seek the source of an unnatural current, escort travelers through submerged ruins, or follow a recurring dream of a place beneath the sea.
