Vaelari of Abadonya

Vaelari are a highly intelligent telepathic people most strongly associated with Aurelion. Their thin sensory antennae, disciplined mental traditions, and natural psychic talents make them distinctive among the peoples of Abadonya. Vaelari communities are commonly found around arcane academies, observatories, fortified centers of learning, and secluded enclaves devoted to scholarship and mental discipline.

A People of Mind and Discipline

Vaelari communities in Aurelion are built around education, memory, and disciplined thought. Children are taught language, history, mental etiquette, and careful use of telepathy from an early age.

They consider thought-sharing a normal part of life rather than a supernatural novelty. Even so, personal boundaries are important. Reaching into another person's awareness without invitation is considered rude at best and deeply invasive at worst.

Their natural aptitude for scholarship has made Vaelari common among Aurelion's researchers, tacticians, archivists, diplomats, healers, and arcane specialists.

AppearanceAntennae & Distinct Builds

A People Easy to Recognize

All Vaelari possess a pair of thin, flexible antennae that rise from just below the hairline. These antennae react subtly to attention, emotion, and concentration.

Vaelari show strong physical differences between sexes. Males are generally shorter, broader, and more muscular, while females are usually taller, more graceful, and more commanding in appearance.

These differences influence traditional expectations in some communities but do not determine profession, class, or social role. Vaelari of either sex can be scholars, soldiers, spellcasters, diplomats, explorers, or artisans.

Aurelion Vaelari favor clothing that balances elegance with function: fitted robes, practical travel garments, light armor, and insignia identifying academy, house, discipline, or rank.

Society & ScholarshipThe Learned Houses

Knowledge Before Prestige

Vaelari society places enormous value on learning. A respected teacher, strategist, researcher, or healer may carry more social weight than a wealthy merchant or hereditary official.

Many communities organize themselves into learned houses, each associated with a field of study, military tradition, magical discipline, or philosophical school.

Leadership traditions are often matriarchal, particularly in older Aurelion enclaves, though capable men frequently hold military, scholarly, and civic authority.

Debate is considered healthy when conducted with purpose. Ignorance is not shameful, but refusing to learn is often viewed as a serious flaw.

Telepathy & EtiquetteMind to Mind

Privacy Is a Discipline

Vaelari telepathy is limited in range but extraordinarily useful. In ordinary life it allows silent conversation, discreet communication, and rapid exchange of warnings.

Mental etiquette is taught alongside spoken language. A Vaelari is expected to announce themselves mentally rather than abruptly forcing attention onto another person.

In battle, telepathy becomes a major tactical advantage. Vaelari soldiers can coordinate flanking positions, warn allies, and relay short commands without shouting.

Mixed adventuring companies sometimes train alongside Vaelari specifically to learn how to respond to silent tactical messages.

Aurelion HeritageAncestral Homeland & Major Population

Mind-Houses of the Arcane Region

Aurelion is the principal homeland associated with Vaelari in Abadonya. Their oldest communities developed near centers of arcane study and strategic mountain routes where disciplined communication proved especially valuable.

Some Vaelari houses have served the same academy or observatory for generations. Others maintain independent enclaves focused on psychic training, diplomacy, military planning, or preservation of difficult knowledge.

Because of Aurelion's dangerous ruins and magical anomalies, Vaelari expedition teams are highly valued. Their ability to communicate silently can keep an entire party coordinated when noise, distance, or hostile magic makes ordinary speech unreliable.

Faith & OutlookMind, Magic & Responsibility

Thought Has Consequence

Vaelari philosophies often emphasize self-mastery, intellectual responsibility, and the consequences of acting without understanding.

In Abadonya, many Vaelari are drawn to Mandella through traditions of wisdom, truth, and preserved knowledge, while others follow Rashtala because of the central role magic plays in Aurelion.

Some Vaelari treat religion primarily as a subject of serious philosophical study. Questions of memory, free will, identity, and truth are especially important to a people accustomed to direct mental communication.

Vaelari may follow any alignment or deity. Intelligence and telepathy influence culture, not morality.

Alternate Racial Trait

Insidious Telepathy: Some Vaelari are especially skilled at influencing others through mental contact. They gain a +1 racial bonus on Charisma-based skill checks to influence creatures with whom they are telepathically communicating. If issuing a telepathic command to a charmed or dominated creature, they also gain a +1 racial bonus on Charisma checks to compel that creature to obey. This replaces Vaelari Magic.

This option uses the normal Pathfinder 1e alternate racial trait replacement rules.

AdventurersKnowledge Beyond the Academy

Learning Requires Experience

Vaelari often become adventurers because scholarship alone cannot answer every question. Ancient ruins, strange magical phenomena, lost civilizations, and hidden histories demand direct investigation.

Wizards, psychics, investigators, magi, cavaliers, fighters, bards, and other intellectually or tactically focused classes are common, though Vaelari can pursue any class.

An Aurelion Vaelari adventurer may be searching for a lost archive, testing a theory in the field, serving as a tactical specialist, or following a psychic mystery too dangerous to remain inside an academy.
